Rough terrain forklifts are built for ground a warehouse truck cannot cope with: construction sites, timber and steel yards, farms, and any site where the surface is soft, rutted or on a slope. Larger pneumatic tyres, greater ground clearance and a stronger drivetrain are what separate them from a standard counterbalance machine.

The main decision is drive configuration. Two-wheel drive is enough for firm, mostly level yards and costs less to buy and run. Four-wheel drive earns its place where the ground is genuinely soft, loose or sloped, and it is the safer choice if the site changes with the weather. Beyond drive, match the capacity to the heaviest load you actually handle rather than the heaviest you have ever handled.
